Backup patches are attached to the back of the ecard in orienteering. The backup patch protects the runner from electronic errors. A hole pattern is formed on the backup patch when punching controls. When a runner is disqualified, the hole pattern is compared to the course template.

The backup patches are waterproof and can be printed on (e.g. name, start time, start no) with a suitable printer.
